The symbols are defined in the TextMate bundles that are included in Textastic.
This is documented in the TextMate manual: http://manual.macromates.com/en/navigation_overview#customizing_the_list
You can modify existing TextMate bundles (most can be found at https://github.com/textmate) and add them to Textastic: http://www.textasticapp.com/v3/manual/lessons/How_can_I_add_my_own_syntax_definitions_and_themes.html

Hi, you can try to use this markdown TextMate bundle with Textastic: https://github.com/fletcher/markdown.tmbundle
It seems like it does support highlighting of footnotes.
See http://www.textasticapp.com/v3/manual/lessons/How_can_I_add_my_own_syntax_definitions_and_themes.html for how to add it to Textastic.
If you send me an example, I can try to reproduce it on my iPad.
There shouldn't be limits beside the restrictions iOS places on JavaScript execution.
Yeah, I have thought about that. Maybe I'll do something like that in the future.
Sorry, but this is not possible. The iPad doesn't support mouse input devices.
I still haven't found a way to enable this in UIWebView. I doubt that this can be enabled in third party apps. But if anyone knows - tell me!
GoodReader has a great sync feature. I'll consider adding something similar.
Textastic 3 supports custom syntax definitions that are compatible with TextMate.
There is a TextMate bundle for Go available at

Here's how to add it to Textastic:
I hope this helps.
iCloud would only really make sense if you own two iPads. I'm not sure if there are a lot of people who have own Textastic and two devices.
I could imagine creating a companion app for Mac, though.
