Yes, this seems to be a bug in iOS 9 and a reboot usually fixes it. :(

You can add custom syntax definitions to Textastic by using TextMate bundles. See http://www.textasticapp.com/v5/manual/lessons/How_can_I_add_my_own_syntax_definitions__themes_and_templates.html
A quick search for "Gherkin tmbundle" in Google brought up this TextMate bundle which may work:

Does it work again? Sometimes the iCloud servers do have a hiccup and it starts to work again after some time.

Are you sure this is related to Textastic?


Have you added any folder to the sidebar maybe? I've seen CPU spikes when adding certain folders that change often to the sidebar.

I've submitted Textastic 5.3.1 to the App Store which fixes this problem.
