Tabs for Open Files / Show list of recently opened files when tapping on the file name
First off, thank you for the wonderful app. It truly is the best one on the App Store and most well thought out and implemented.
One frustration that I have with it, however, is switching between files that I'm currently using (think of them as open files, or files I am focused on). A normal IDE would have tabs to keep files accessible to the user. This application needs something to that effect.
A great implementation of tabs for this app, which would take up ANY space would be a very similar implementation of the Air Sharing apps navigational breadcrumb list ( see an example at http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/air-sharing.png ).
In that implementation, the user could click on the heading of the file that is located on the top bar in the middle (usually the filename). A list would then show up under the filename with "recently opened files" that the user simple has to tap to reopen. Also, a "close" mechanic should be supplied in case you want to remove it from your currently opened files.
Having this feature would really help me get more out of this already wonderful app and remove a major annoyance.

I thought about tabs but they take away a lot of screen real estate.
Having a list of recent files might be a solution. I'll consider it for a future version.

I completely agree, tabs takes way too much space. A button with recent files would have almost the same result and keep the screen looking less "clogged"..

I could certainly show a list of recently opened files in a Popover when tapping on the file name label. Also, a close button would fit nicely in there.

Tabs might take up some screen real estate, but I would find Tabs very helpful. I also have a project where I have to go back and forth between files in different folders and tabs would save a lot of time for someone in this kind of situation.

Add my vote for tabs or drop-down - a necessity for remote development.
I really enjoy using this app on the go also. I think that having the ability to work on multiple files would be great. I get that space is a premium. Just thinking how safari works when you open a new page show you a list of current open pages or perhaps how the bookmarks bar is revealed when you tap the address bar. Possible sources of inspiration.
Consider a back button. Click once to go to the previous most recent file. Press and hold for a list. Just a suggestion.
First of all. Textastic is a VERY cool app for programming on the iPad. And now ;o) A list of recent files would be a good alternative to tabs. Editing multiple files at the same time is a feature that i miss in this app.
Could you make the tabs hidden until you scroll to the top of the page? Maybe that could be a setting within the app, or you could disable the tabs completely if you wanted more screen space. Safari in the upcoming iOS5 has tabs so I think it is a good idea, not sure if they did anything special to save on screen real estate in their implementation.
The tabs in iOS 5 beta 3 are limited to a number of 8 so that they are still touchable. Also, in Safari, most of the time you don't have the on-screen keyboard visible all the time like in Textastic.
I guess it depends how you use Textastic. I mainly use it for code reviews and not much editing, so the keyboard is rarely shown. I won't use it much for editing until it supports SVN so I can commit changes.
please make a tab or recent files in iOS5. I work a lot in this program and a long switching between files to stop my work.

In Textastic 3.0 you can bring up a list of recently used files by tapping on the name of the currently open file.
There's also a button to close the currently open file.
You can remove individual items from the list or clear the list.
