Is there a way to stop Textastic from stripping Carriage Returns out of text pasted into Gmail ?

- type a multi line note

- select everything

- Copy

- Paste into Gmail app

All line breaks are lost.

I can reproduce the issue with the Gmail app. Pasting the same text into Apple's Mail does give me line breaks though. I'll try to find out more.

I noticed tonight that the same behaviour occurs when pasting text copied from Textastic into Google Keep.

I also have this problem when pasting from Textastic into a gmail message.  My work around is to paste the text into iOS Notes or some other app that preserves the line feeds, then copy it from there and paste it into gmail.  Not sure why the line feed characters copied to the clipboard are different when they come from Textastic versus Notes, but if there is a way to examine the clipboard contents, that might offfer some clues as to what is happening.

The difference seems to be that when you copy the selection in the Notes app, it puts the text onto the clipboard in two formats: plain text and HTML. The Gmail app then pastes the HTML which includes <br> tags for line breaks.

Textastic only puts the selection in plain text format onto the clipboard (like most text editors).

The Gmail app's mail composer doesn't handle plain text correctly and doesn't insert <br> tags when it encounters new line characters in plain text.

This is a bug in the Gmail app.

I can reproduce it when copying text from these other apps and pasting it into a new email in Gmail as well:

  • iA Writer
  • 1Writer
  • GoCoEdit
  • Runestone

Since we know that Google is reading everything we type, maybe we can consider these bugs in their apps to have been reported already. 8-)

I've just followed the instructions at

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/9212652?co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS&oco=1 and sent feedback about this to Google.

I will post it too in case they have some minimum threshold before they will fix a bug.  It only took me 8 years to get a Maps bug partially fixed.

I've sent feedback as well.  In case it's useful, here's what I sent to Google:

I sometimes compose text for a message in another app, then paste that text into the body of my message in Gmail.
Often, Gmail loses the line breaks in my text.

The developer of Textastic (app for iPad) has identified the problem in Gmail. They say:
